Contemporary Coastal Transformation

This project in East Preston involved a two-storey rear extension, full refurbishment and external alterations to transform a dated property into a modern, spacious and highly functional coastal home. The brief focused on creating generous internal spaces, enhancing natural light and delivering a durable, low-maintenance exterior, specifically for a marine environment. Another key objective of the project was to create larger and better-proportioned bedrooms, including a new master suite featuring a ensuite bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe. By reworking the first-floor layout and expanding the rear elevation, new bright and generous bedrooms were created.

On entering the home, visitors are now greeted by a vast, light-filled entrance hallway. This redesigned space includes striking crittal-style doors that frame a direct, uninterrupted view of the garden beyond, creating an immediate sense of openness and connection to the outdoors. A new staircase with timber accents adds warmth and architectural interest to the space.

Externally, the home has undergone a complete visual transformation. A new two-car garage with a sleek flat roof forms part of the modernised frontage whilst the exterior materials and finishes were carefully selected for longevity and minimal maintenance, with marine-grade components designed to withstand coastal weather conditions. At the rear, large-format glazing and contemporary cladding creates a bold, modern aesthetic that opens the home to the garden and maximises natural light. The front elevation has been modernised yet is thoughtfully sympathetic to the neighbouring architecture. The installation of new contemporary windows throughout the house further enhances the property’s energy efficiency, aesthetics, and internal light levels. Their clean, dark frames complement both the soft white render and the natural timber accents, tying the home’s character together front to back.

The final result is a carefully balanced transformation; a home that feels spacious, inviting, and unmistakably modern, yet remains sensitive to its coastal surroundings. With enlarged living spaces, a refined material palette, and a fresh architectural identity, this East Preston property now delivers the comfort, style, and practicality the homeowners envisioned.
